The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This work is sold unframed.
We are grateful to Simon Parkes Art Conservation Inc. for preparing the following condition report (written communication, 25 June 2019):
This work has an old glue lining. The surface is stable, and the paint layer is still well textured. The work is clean, retouched and lightly varnished. The retouches are well applied. Under ultraviolet light, there are visible remnants of old varnish and the original paint layer is quite strongly fluorescent. There are dark fluorescent areas, for instance in the hair of the child in the lower left, but this is original pigment. There are a few retouches addressing three losses on the bottom edge beneath this child. There seems to be a thin vertical line of retouching running immediately to the right of the Roman temple in the distance. There is a group of retouches in the hills beyond the water, and to some cracking in the far left side of the water. These small isolated restorations are very minimal, and the work is in very good condition overall.
