The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We are grateful to Simon Parkes Conservation Inc. for preparing the following condition report (written communication 5 March 2021):
These works have not been recently restored, but they both seem to generally be in good condition. The canvases were lined in the 1970s with wax as an adhesive. They are dirty with a yellowed varnish, and the varnish has developed a slightly speckled finish. There are retouches around the extreme edges of both works.
In Horses Eating from a Manger, there are possibly very light applications of retouching in the blue sky and clouds, where some thinness may have developed. There are also retouches in the horses and perhaps in a few spots in the landscape. In Horses Drinking from a Water Trough, there are only a few spots of retouching in the black horse and in the dark clouds.
Both works would respond well to restoration.
