The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The surface is stable and the canvas is unlined. The impressions of the cross bars are faintly visible. There is an even fine craquelure overall. There is scuffing at the right and lower extreme edges and minor scuffing on the upper and left extreme edges due to frame abrasion. On the reverse, covered by the vertical cross bar in the lower half is a reinforcement to the canvas and there is a corresponding spot of retouching in the sitter's lap under UV light inspection. Under UV light inspection, there is retouching at the extreme edges. There are older retouches in the lower right corner and two small areas next to the hands. There is an older dot of retouching in the proper left eye and a spot on the proper left cheek. There two small areas of older retouching, one just above the head and at the center of the left edge.
