A portrait inscribed 'with love and hope'. Irina Nikolaevna Mendeleeva-Tomashevskaya (1903-1973) was a Soviet literary critic, and a close friend and support of Anna Akhmatova. Her friendship with Solzhenitsyn began in 1967, when she furnished the writer with research information about the expulsion of the Crimean Tatars, the dispossession of the kulaks and other subjects. Solzhenitsyn began the first draft of The Red Wheel at Tomashevskaya’s house in Gurzuf in early 1969.
