Large-format portrait photograph signed ('Lev Tolstoy') and inscribed to Nina (Antonina) Alexandrovna Fride, n.p., 16 March 1901.

The image by Scherer, Nabholz & Co., Moscow, 202 x 134mm, mount 352 x 256mm. Inscribed in Russian on the lower margin. Provenance: Christie’s, 24 June 1992, lot 206 (part).

An imposing portrait photograph. Nina (Antonina) Fride (1859-1942) was an opera singer: she was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre from 1884, and in 1890 sang at the first performance of Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades.
