A portrait for an artist. Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) was a celebrated French painter and sculptor of strong anti-clerical and republican convictions. He painted at least one scene inspired by a Tolstoy work – depicting Maslova in prison, from Tolstoy's last novel Resurrection (1899).
