Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1866-1941)
Publishing The Birth of Gods in Czech. 1924
Typed document signed ('Dmitri Merejkovski'), Villa Evelina, Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes), France, 6 October 1924.

In French. One page, 258 x 212mm.

Publishing The Birth of Gods in Czech. Merezhkovsky cedes to the publishing house of Kvasnicka et Hampl, Prague, the Czech translation and publishing rights for his book The Birth of Gods. Tutankhamun in Crete, for a price of 2,000 francs, with the edition strictly limited to 3,000 copies. This 'must bear the author's name. It must involve no change or modification, other than those judged indispensible for adapting them to the spirit of the Czech language'; Merezhkovsky is to receive five copies. He proposes to send the first part of the Russian text with the complete French translation; the remainder of the Russian text will follow no later than the beginning of December.

The Birth of Gods. Tutankhamun in Crete (1925) was the first of the series of historical/philosophical treatises characteristic of Merezhkovsky's output in the 1920s and 30s: it was of this work that he remarked 'What I use the Past for is only searching for the Future. The Present is a kind of exile to me'.
