Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1866-1941)
The 'charm' of Napoleon
Autograph letter signed ('D. Merejkovsky', signed again with initials after the postscript) to an unidentified princess, Villa Alba, Le Cornet, Alpes Maritimes, France, 15 November 1926.

In French. 1½ pages, 270 x 210mm.

'Fascinated by the charm' of Napoleon. Merezhkovsky thanks his correspondent for sending her memories of Napoleon: 'My study is already quite far advanced and I hope soon to complete the first part, "Napoleon the Man", so as to start upon the second, "N[apoleon] – The Life". It will be altogether quite a large volume of 300-350 pages. More than ever I find myself fascinated by the charm of this "ens realissimum", "the most real of beings" as Nietzsche calls him'. He clarifies the best transcription of his name in French, though noting 'Slavic phonetics cannot be rendered exactly by Latin languages'; and he notes that he will be returning to Paris in ten days.
