Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1866-1941)
On the publication in America of Unknown Jesus. 1933
Autograph letter signed ('D. Merezhkovsky') to Bernard Guilbert Guerney, 14 January 1933.

In Russian. One page, 251 x 209mm.

On the publication in America of Unknown Jesus. 'I sent you a telegram today informing you that I have sold the publication of Unknown Jesus. In the situation in which I still find myself, I could not possibly refuse it, and you, I hope, will understand this, though the terms are perhaps less favourable than those which could have materialised, had it been through your mediation. / I have alerted the publisher that you had taken upon yourself a translation of my book, that all your translations enjoy a great success (something that he probably knows himself) and asked him to get in touch with you directly as soon as possible'.

Unknown Jesus (first published in Belgrade, 1932) was the third, and most admired, work in a trilogy comprising The Mystery of the Three: Egypt and Babylon (1925) and Mystery of the West: Atlantis-Europe (1930), the unifying theme of which was man's possible way to salvation. With its apocalyptic manner, and historically-based analysis of a catastrophic present, Unknown Jesus is in some ways the central work of Merezhkovsky's output in exile. The Russian-born B.G. Guerney (1894-1979) was a New York-based translator, publisher and bookseller.
