Ilya Grigoryevich Ehrenburg (1891-1967)
'Long live the Asturias'. 1934
Typescript signed ('Ilya Ehrenburg') with numerous autograph emendations, 'UHP' [i.e. Uníos Hermanos Proletarios], Oviedo, [1934].

In Russian. Carbon-copy typescript on 13 pages, 270 x 208mm. Provenance: Stargardt, 16 April 2013, lot 100.

'Long live the Asturias'. Ehrenburg's article about the Asturian miners' strike of 1934, which developed into a violent uprising against the conservative regime and was brutally put down by the army and navy: in many ways, it was seen as a prelude to the Spanish Civil War which broke out two years later.

"Long live the Asturias" – I saw these words as much on the walls of Madrid high-rises as on the fences of the remote little villages of Castille. "Long live the Asturias" echoed hundreds of thousands of people at huge rallies. "Long live the Asturias" shouted a collective farm delegate from Malpique, riding a donkey. "Long live the Asturias" – you woke up Spain, enchanted by monks, tied arm and leg by gendarmes...

The numerous autograph emendations add in names of people or organisations in Roman script, as well as making smaller verbal corrections.
