Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin (1870-1953)
'Fog, destroying certain parts of the male organism ...'. 1938
Autograph postcard to Nikolay Roshchin, Paris, [postmarked ?9 August 1938].

In Russian. One page, 148 x 101mm.

Suffering from fog, destroying certain parts of the male organism, but still coming to see Roshchin.

And yet, Capitan, I am on my way to you! I am setting off tomorrow: my doctors informed me that this fog, destroying certain parts of the male organism, has only deleterious effects on people of lower ranks. So what am I worrying about? To you, however it is even beneficial to be struck in that part by fog: it is long overdue! The heat in Paris is just hellish. I visited Biarritz there is not a single room to be found! Seriously just wasted my time doing it. I embrace you.

Bunin’s euphemistic ‘fog’ is hard to interpret, but may refer to the hemorrhoidal bleeding from which he suffered in later life, leading to severe anemia.
