Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelyov (1873-1950)
A statement of his artistic motivation. 1929
Autograph manuscript signed ('Iv. Shmelyov'), a statement of his artistic motivation, n.p, 24 April 1929.

In Russian. One page, 134 x 210mm.

A statement of his artistic motivation, apparently in reponse to a questionnaire. His aim is 'to awaken what is most beautiful and intrinsically human ... I believe that the human being is in fact, a tool capable of transforming the world, to make it in the image of God ... Humanity ... is only an instrument. The true purpose – the beauty and harmony of all things'.

An émigré because of his opposition to the October revolution, which claimed the life of his son, Shmelyov is best known for his powerful evocations of pre-revolutionary Russia.
