Presentation copy of the first French edition, inscribed by the author in the year of publication to the French dramatist Émile Augier: ‘à Emile Augier / souvenir amical / Iv. Tourguéneff / Bougival / 1873.’ Torrents of Spring ‘is a story of quite extraordinary haunting beauty, constructed with consummate skill [...] It is also of more than usual significance in revealing Turgenev's mind and thought and intimate emotions' (Schapiro). 12mo (175 x 110mm). Half-title (faint browning). Contemporary red quarter pebble-grain cloth over boards; housed in modern cloth slipcase. Provenance: Émile Augier (1820-1889, French dramatist; inscription from the author on half-title) – sold Paris, Ader Nordmann, 29 Nov 2016, lot 142.
