In English. 1¼ pages, 114 x 90mm, on card. Envelope.

A letter of introduction for the jurist and sociologist Maksim Kovalevksy: 'He has the intention to remain in America for three or four months – and I recommend you as warmly as possible this very amiable and intelligent man, so as to render him his sojourn in your fatherland agreeable and useful'.

Maksim Maksimovich Kovalevsky (1851-1916) was at this time a lecturer in law at Moscow University: he lost his position in 1886 because of his liberal stance, and settled in Western Europe, only returning to Russia after the 1905 revolution. Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen (1848-1895) was a Norwegian-American author, professor of Germanic languages at Columbia University from 1881.
