Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883)
On the publication of Clara Milich. 1882
Autograph letter signed ('Iv. Tourguéneff') to [Juliette] Adam, 50 rue de Douai, Paris, 27 November 1882.

In French. Two pages, 178 x 113mm.

On the publication of Clara Milich. 'In accordance to what you said to Georges Chamerot, I shall pass him the manuscript of my novella (which is to appear in the 15 January number of the Nouvelle Revue) so as to have the proofs on 10 December at the latest'. One set of proofs is to be sent to his German translator – he reassures Adam that the translation will not appear until after 15 January. Another will be sent to Adam: 'if you have any comment to make to me – you have all the necessary time'. His health is improving, although he finds it difficult to walk and even to stand upright. In a postscript, he asks her to bring out a short story by his friend Léon Brethous-Lafargue.

Juliette Adam (1836-1936) was an author, salonist, and founding editor of the Nouvelle Revue in 1879. The radical printer Georges Chamerot had in 1874 married Claudie Viardot, Turgenev's favourite of the Viardots' children. Turgenev's health was by now seriously impaired, and Clara Milich was his last published work before his death on 3 September 1883.
