Cabinet photograph signed ('K. Alekseyev (Stanislavski)') to Andrey Pavlovich Petrovsky, n.p., n.d. [c.1911].

The image by Sherer, Nabholz & Co, Moscow, 192 x 135mm, mount 220 x 142mm, laid onto modern card. Inscribed in Russian on the image. Provenance: RR Auction, 2015, lot 884.

The great actor and director at the height of his powers. Stanislavski had revolutionised modern theatre in a series of innovative productions at the Moscow Arts Theatre in the pre-war years, developing his famous 'system'. The image can be dated by comparison with another surviving portrait by Sherer, Nabholz from the same sitting which bears a dated inscription of 1911. The recipient, Andrey Pavlovich Petrovsky (1869-1933) was a fellow actor and director.
