Maxim Gorky (Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, 1868-1936)
'Be steadfast in spirit'. 1905
Cabinet photograph signed ('M. Gorky') and inscribed 'Be steadfast in spirit', Riga, n.d. [1905].

Image by C. Grün, Grosse Sandstrasse 4, Riga, 148 x 104mm, mount 165 x 108mm. Inscribed in Russian on image. Provenance: Stargardt, 21/22 March 2006, lot 116.

'Be steadfast in spirit'. Gorky visited Riga with Maria Andreeva, his common-law wife, during a tour of the latter's Moscow Art Theatre. Gorky's inscription may be inspired by the events of the 1905 Revolution and his subsequent imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress, Saint Petersburg, in January of that year.
