Gorky in America. Gorky visited the United States from 10 April to 13 October: the visit was overshadowed by press scandal about the nature of his relationship with Maria Andreyeva, and Gorky's written impressions of American society were scathing. Elias Goldensky (1867-1943) was a well-known portraitist.
