Zinaida Nikolayevna Gippius (1869-1945)
An article on the Revolution. n.d.
Autograph manuscript, part of an article on the Russian Revolution, a draft of a poem about Poland and other notes, n.p., n.d. [c.1919].

In Russian. Two pages, 281 x 220mm, the article in ink on recto, draft poem (17 lines), two lists of poems and other notes in pencil on verso, with some marginal doodles; later annotations in pen [by Temira Pachmuss].

An article on the Revolution and an unpublished poem on Poland. The article records Gippius's horror at the Russian Revolution, an event which she and Merezhkovsky perceived as the accession of 'the kingdom of Antichrist'. The two numbered lists of 6 and then 9 poems comprise compositions for the period 1917-1919 – the period immediately before the Merezhkovskys' departure from Russia, which took place at the end of 1919, moving initially to Poland, before eventually, in 1920, going on to settle in Paris. The poem about Poland presumably derives from this brief stay in the country: one other poem by Gippius about Poland is known, dating to 1915, but the present poem is apparently unpublished and unknown. Other notes on the page mention 'Not enough time to finish about Blok' and 'Rebellious revolutionary Petersburg'.
