Born in Beijing in 1963, An Du graduated with an archaeology degree from Peking University. A self-taught painter, An examined the application of color from Western modernist paintings, and particularly enjoyed the expression of color by post-impressionists. He later studied traditional Chinese landscape paintings and discovered the spirituality of literati painting, which he also considered to be the spirit of Zen.
