Lot Essay

Born in Beijing in 1963, An Du graduated with an archaeology degree from Peking University. A self-taught painter, An examined the application of color from Western modernist paintings, and particularly enjoyed the expression of color by post-impressionists. He later studied traditional Chinese landscape paintings and discovered the spirituality of literati painting, which he also considered to be the spirit of Zen. However, unlike the ancient literati paintings which promoted ‘simplicity, subtleness, sparseness‘, An Du features a flourishing and intricate landscape to proclaim his desire for unity of man and nature.
