Lot Essay

Feng Guifen, who styled himself as Linyi, Jingting, and Dengweishanren, was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu province. A prominent thinker and essayist of the late-Qing dynasty, Feng participated in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion and the development of the Self-Strengthening Movement. Practised in calligraphy, Feng was especially known for his seal and clerical scripts and was the author of titles such as Textual research on Shuowen Jiezi.
