Feng Yuxiang, born in Baoding, Hebei Province, joined the Huai Army in 1896, and transferred to Yuan Shikai’s (1859-1916) Beiyang Army. In the Second Zhili–Fengtian War, Feng’s defection to the Fengtian clique and ultimately caused the demise of the Zhili Clique. He served as the vice premier of the Republic of China from 1928-1930. In 1935, he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the National Revolutionary Army. Feng was one of the most important political and military leaders, and his actions had major influence on the history of China during the Republican period.
