Provenance
He Man’an, born in Panyu, Guangdong Province, was an important collector of Chinese paintings and calligraphy in the region of Lingnan. The name of his studio was Lingbi Shanfang and he was especially fond of collecting works by artists in the Lingnan region.

Lot Essay

Huang Jie was a poet, a journalist, a historian, a revolutionary, and a master of Chinese studies. His poetry style combined the styles of the Tang and Song styles, was famous at that time. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, he founded the Sinology Preservation Society along with Zhang Taiyan (1868-1936) and other founding members. After the founding of Republic of China, he joined Nanshe and taught at Bejing and Tsinghua University. From 1928 to 1929, he served as Education Department Director at the Guangdong Provincial Government.

The recipient of this work is Sun Ke, the son of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925). He grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and received his master degree at Columbia University. He returned to China in 1917 and became a member of Kuomintang and an official of the Republic of China government in Guangzhou.
