Dedicated to Professor Haneda
NOTE:
The recipient of this work was Professor Haneda Tōru (1882-1955). Born in Kyoto, he was one of the founding fathers of modern Oriental Studies in Japan. In July 1907, he graduated from the History Department of the Tokyo Imperial University, and was admitted to the newly established Graduate School of Kyoto University, where he studied under Professor of Oriental Studies, Naitō Konan. After graduation, Haneda remained in the school and taught. Together with his teachers Naitō Konan and Kuwabara Jitsuzō (1866-1934), they established the so-called golden age of Kyoto University's East Asian history research and formed the "Kyoto History School of Toyo Historiography." In particular, Haneda’s study of Central Asian history and Dunhuang studies was the pinnacle of his academic career and played an important role in the establishment of the history of Japanese Central Asian studies. After Naitō and Kuwabara retired, Haneda became the figurehead of oriental studies of Kyoto Imperial University, upholding the academic position of "Kyoto School".
