Born in Guangxi in 1918, Chen Jupu spent time in Hong Kong and Taiwan as a scholar, poet, calligrapher, and painter. Accomplished in many scripts, Chen was a student of Wang Shizhao (1905-1984) and his works were honoured at the Exhibition of Hong Kong Contemporary Art at the City Museum and Art Gallery as well as the National Fine Art Exhibition at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Chen also presided over the Chinese Calligraphy Society in Hong Kong and was close with many artists, including Tao Yun (1911-2004), Situ Qi (1904-1997), and Su Shijie (1883-1975), among others. For his efforts in coordinating international exchanges and cultural events, as well as promoting calligraphy, Chen was awarded the Calligraphy and Arts Medal by the Taiwan Ministry of Education.

Born in Guangdong in 1911, Tao Yun relocated to Hong Kong in 1949. Owing to his proclivity for depicting natural scenery and penchant for imitating the style of ancient masters, he was regarded as a traditional painter. While Tao was known for his landscape paintings, he also wrote calligraphy and engraved seals. Composed of compact brushwork, the elegant and tranquil aura of Tao Yun’s landscapes affirm his reputation as one of Hong Kong’s remarkable artists.

Su Shijie, a native of Sihui, Guangdong province, graduated from the Guangdong Army Survey School and formerly worked at the Railway Bureau. On behalf of the Tongmenghui founded by Sun Yatsen (1866-1925), he first visited Hong Kong to rally support for the revolution. Later, during the Republican period, he held important positions in the Guangzhou government, including County Magistrate of Sihui and Finance Minister of Guangzhou. As a well-known calligrapher and collector, Su, along with prominent artists Chen Shuren (1883-1948) and Gao Jianfu (1879-1951), founded Qingyouhui, a literary and arts society. Following his settlement in Hong Kong in 1949, Su committed himself to promoting calligraphy and was greatly respected by the art circles. Upon his passing in 1975, the Hong Kong Museum of Art dedicated a solo exhibition of his calligraphy in his honour.
