Lot Essay

Presently residing in Beijing, Wei Ligang was born in 1964 in Datong, Shanxi and studied Mathematics at Nankai University in Tianjin. Since 1985, he has held solo and group exhibitions in China and overseas, including the National Art Museum of China and the Shanghai Museum of Art. Convinced that our perception of beauty rests in the flora and fauna, Wei expresses his appreciation for animals and plants through alluding to pictographs — the original bond between art and nature. As Wei pays tribute to the thousand-year-old Chinese calligraphic tradition, his clever and bold compositions and brushstrokes give his ‘writing-image’ a distinct contemporary outlook.
