Lot Essay

Xia Tonghe, who styled himself as Jiping, Yongqing, and Man of Shishan, was a native of Majiang, Guizhou province, a Zhuangyuan (first-place holder during the Imperial examinations) during the Guangxu era, and a calligrapher.

Born into the Mo family in Huitong, Guangdong province, Mo Heming, the recipient of the couplet, was a prominent social activist and philanthropist. Owing to his active participation in cultural events and his passion for collecting inscriptions, paintings and calligraphy, Mo shared close friendships with many artists from Guangdong and Hong Kong, and established the Yangyunshanguan in Huitong.
