A native from Zunhua, Hebei province, Qin Zhongwen was an art history theorist, an art educator, and a prominent landscape painter. Besides his acclaimed landscape style, which took after the Four Wangs of early Qing dynasty and the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty, Qin was also skilled at calligraphy and painting bamboos in ink. On top of teaching in several established institutions, Qin wrote one of the most important books in the early 20th century regarding the history of Chinese paintings.
