Lot Essay

A native of Hengyang, Hunan province, Zeng Xi, styled as Ziji, was a prominent educator, painter, calligrapher, connoisseur, and collector. A leading figure in modern Shanghai School, along with Wu Changshuo, Shen Zengzhi, and Li Ruiqing, they are known as the ‘Four Great Calligraphers of the Early Republic’. Acclaimed artist Zhang Daqian was one of his pupils.
