The original owner of this collection was Zhang Daqian’s assistant in Taiwan, who commissioned the artist to write calligraphic works for her family’s restaurant business abroad, amongst other paintings. The names of the businesses were as written and they presented a highly desirable focal point when hung. The works were later passed down by descent. Another four works by Zhang Daqian from the collection will be offered in Christie's Fine Chinese Modern Paintings sale on May 29, 2018. (LOTS 1237-1240)
