Lot Essay

Zhang Ruo’ai, who styled himself as “Qinglan” and “Jingcai,” is the son of Zhang Tingyu, a prime minister of Qing dynasty. During the Yongzheng reign, he was appointed the director of Board of Rites, and produced calligraphy and paintings for the inner court. He is an expert landscape and flowers-and-birds artist whose style were influenced by Wang Guxiang (1501-1568) and Zhou Zhimian (1521-?).
