Lot Essay

A native of Panyu, Guangdong province, Zhang Shaoshi was a student of Deng Fen and was famous for his flower paintings, particularly those of peonies. After settling in Hong Kong, Zhang founded the Magnolia Studio to teach painting. Although he was known as the ‘King of Peony’, Zhang also painted characters, ladies, and landscapes.
