Lot Essay

The recipient of this painting Cao Sihong was an avid collector of Chinese painting and calligraphy in Macau. During the Sino-Japanese War he befriended Cantonese artists who fled to Macau, and was particularly friendly with Lingnan School artists, from whom he acquired many works of art . After the war Fang Rending, having returned to Mainland China, sent his friend Cao this painting not only as a token of friendship, but also as a reminder of the old times.
