Specialist Note:
Weng Tonghe was a native of Changshou, Jiangsu province. He passed the civil examination in 1856 and started working up the ranks and finally retired from office duties due to the political coup of 1898. Known as the best calligrapher of the Tongzhi and Guanxu period (1862-1907), Weng’s calligraphy is strong and powerful, showing the influence of the old masters such as Ouyang Xiu, Yan Zhenqin, Su Shi and Mi Fu.
