Specialist Note:
Feng Zikai was one of the pioneering artist of manhua (cartoon/comic). His cartoons, created using a hybrid of Chinese and Western techniques, are about matters of daily life reflecting humanistic concern and heart-warming insights into the most ordinary things. Though the stories and people portrayed may seem ordinary, they touch on many levels of human life, from personal, political, and even universal values that we all share. Selling Paintings depicts the owner of the painting shop holding the top of the hanging scroll, while the customer opens up the painting to view it with his friends. On the wall hangs a painting of Guanyin and a calligraphy work. There are also more hanging scrolls in the basket next to the shop owner. It depicts activity of a paintings shop very similar to ones at Hollywood Road in Hong Kong.
