A CARVED SPINACH-GREEN JADE BRUSH POT
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The thick and cylindrical sides are carved, unfinished, with figures in a continuous mountain landscape scene. The stone is of deep green color with some paler mottling and dark speckling throughout.

Lot Essay

The present brush pot is interesting as it is unfinished and provides a fascinating insight to planning of the composition and shows different stages of carving the relief decoration. A green jade brush pot of similar size (17 cm.), carved with scholars in a continuous mountain landscape, was sold at Christie's New York, 19-20 September 2013, lot 1743, where it was dated to Qianlong period (1736-1795).
