Frank Stout was Emily Mason and Wolf Kahn’s neighbor in New York, who introduced them to the Brattleboro area of Vermont where they purchased their farm. Stout was one of the couple’s closest friends, and they felt he was one of the most underrecognized artists of their time.

Not framed. The canvas is not lined. With abrasion to the extreme edges. Overall with surface soiling. A small abrasion to the left foreground with associated pigment loss. An approx. 2 in. abrasion to the upper left quadrant and two short abrasions to the upper right quadrant. An approx. 3⁄4 in. abrasion to the right foreground. The canvas with two circular dimples at either side of the figure's head. The one to her proper right issuing a vertical fine line running approx. 6 in., with associated pigment loss. A horizontal stretcher bar mark to the upper edge. The canvas revarnished. Examined under ultraviolet light. A repair to the figure's torso and the background to her proper right side, and to the far right center edge, with associated inpainting. Scattered strokes of inpainting, primarily to background near her proper left shoulder.
