Lot Essay

The excavations of both Pompeii and Herculaneum from 1738 revived a great interest in the classical world and prompted many to visit the new sites on their Grand Tour. Coincidentally Mount Vesuvius became more active at this time, prompting many English visitors to come and admire the sight and visit Naples. To immortalise this moment, the local Neapolitan craftsmen - renowned in the art of tartarugari - produced many piqué tortoiseshell items such as caskets, ewers with basins, liqueur cabinets, candlesticks, writing cases, and especially little boxes and snuffboxes, such as this example, as the ultimate souvenir for visitors on the Grand Tour.
