BI BAICHUAN (ACTIVE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY)
Bi Baichuan, who was originally from the Tianjin area, was an artist active in the Minguo period. Like his teacher Xu Yansun (1899-1961), he excelled in the meticulous gongbi style of painting and created compositions inspired by such early masters as Song and Yuan-dynasty artists, and Qiu Ying, as noted in his inscriptions on his paintings. Boys at Play belongs to an American naval officer who visited Tianjin in autumn 1945 and spent time visiting local sites.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture. Across the four scroll, mild foxing and soiling can be seen, as well as some minor horizontal creases along the left and right edges. The paper appears weathered. It is in our opinion that this work is in very good to excellent condition.
