MASCAGNI, Paolo (1755-1815). Anatomia universale. Florence: V. Batelli e Figli, 1833.

Smaller folio, authorized edition of Mascagni’s great anatomical work. This edition contains reduced versions of the spectacular plates in the elephant folio edition of 1832. The imposing illustrations even at this smaller (yet still quite large) size exemplify the new "free-floating" style of anatomical imagery. Garrison and Morton 409.1; Wellcome IV, 73.

Folio (440 x 310mm). 150 engraved plates by Antonio Serantoni, 75 of which are hand-colored, with 75 black-and-white duplicates with printed captions bound facing their counterparts (title and preliminary leaves creased and stained, scattered spotting throughout including to some plates). Contemporary green half morocco and decorated paper boards (quite worn with bottom of spine panel lacking and hinges cracked). Provenance: Biblioteca Medica, Roma (stamps throughout and library label on front pastedown).
