Dukes of Sussex copy of a Latin Bible with illuminated initial. Not in BMC or the Bavarian State Library. HC 3082; GW 4247; Bod-inc B-281; Goff B-572; ISTC ib00572000.

Chancery folio (289 x 194mm). 371 leaves (of 372, lacking first text leaf). Large illuminated initial on red ground at opening of Genesis, 5- and 2-line initials in red, blue, and particolor, red and blue paragraph marks (some dampstaining, a few spots, some headlines just shaved towards end, a few smaller initials smudged). 19th-century brown morocco gilt by Bedford, edges gilt (joints a little worn). Provenance: some marginal marks, including ink doodles in initials, pen trials on first blank – "William R. Stewart" (signature on flyleaf) – Dukes of Sussex (armorial bookplate; their sale, 1 July 1844, lot 923) – sold through E.P. Dutton and Co. in 1923 (description).
