In French. One page on vellum, 420 x 530mm (slight cockling at corners, folded).

Napoleon commutes the sentence of a deserter from his army. Jacques Vray, a gunner of the 84th Regiment of the Line, had been sentenced to death for desertion at Brescia. Here, Napoleon commutes the sentence to ten years "Boulet," (ie. ball and chain). Additionally signed by the Ministers of Justice and State. Provenance: Christie's, 8 March 1978, lot 56.
