First edition, first issue. This first issue variant features no publisher’s advertisements, such as the later-issue advertisement for Stoker’s The Shoulder of Shasta; and the main body of text is printed on uncoated wove paper. The original boards’ iconic yellow cloth and backstrip have been mounted on lower flyleaves in a handsome binding by Bretano’s. Octavo (185x120mm). Half-title (occasional minor stains). Early yellow crushed morocco by Brentano’s, a.e.g., with original yellow cloth of both covers and spine bound in at ends (the original cloth soiling and trimmed). Provenance: M[onsieur] Venning (faded half-title inscription).
