DURANTI, Guillelmus (1237-1296). Rationale divinorum officiorum. [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, c.1475.]

Ulrich Zel edition of Duranti's handbook to the symbolism of Church ritual, in a contemporary binding. This treatise was a vital source of information on the liturgy of the Latin church, witnessed by its continued popularity into the Renaissance. This edition comes from the press of the first Cologne printer and is already the eighth edition c.1475; the first was printed by Fust and Schoeffer at Mainz in 1459. Chancery folio (288 x 207mm). 473 leaves (of 474, without final blank). Red penwork initials with reserved decoration, red Lombards (blank areas repaired on a few leaves, closed tear in text to one leaf; some light staining and spotting; one passage blacked out). Contemporary Westphalian blindstamped calf over wooden boards, brass clasps and catches (rebacked, boards very worn with restoration, lacking one clasp). Provenance: JHJ (stamp on first leaf) – acquired from Menno Hertzberger and Co, Amsterdam, 18 May 1966.
