Second[?] Latin edition of the letter from the King of Portugal to Pope Leo X reporting on the conquest of Malacca. See lot 37 for a description of the contents. This edition includes an introduction by Jakob Spiegel (1483-1547), a prominent humanist at the court of Maximilian I. The quotation above is included in his introduction and loosely translates as: "God will make one of all nations / He lays the path by which he can join / Sunrise and sunset with easy commerce." Quarto (210 x 143mm). Four leaves. Woodcut arms of Portugal on the title (pressed). Full red morocco by Chambolle-Duru, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt (tips rubbed, boards mildly darkened).
