Details
DELACROIX, Eugène (1798-1863). Two autograph manuscripts on anatomy, the first with an original watercolor landscape on the verso, no place, no date.

Three and a half pages total including the drawing. The first manuscript is 280 x 208mm, bifolium (some toning/fading, a few edge tears including a 2 cm closed tear touching manuscript), float-mounted to display the drawing and framed (unexamined out of frame); the second is quarto, 257 x 200mm (small marginal chip).

Original drawing and manuscript showing two sides of the great Romantic artist, on the same sheet of paper. The text of the manuscript comprises notes on the muscles of human legs and arms, and include a few interlinear corrections. These resemble class notes and may possibly date from Delacroix's student years at the École des Beaux-Arts. On the other hand, Delacroix was known for his lifelong commitment to scrupulous study and to draughtsmanship. The drawing is a delicate watercolor and depicts a few stone buildings in a landscape of rolling hills and trees. See Devotion to Drawing: The Karen B. Cohen Collection of Eugène Delacroix, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2018. Provenance: Hôtel Drouot, 10 June 1974, lot 22. Accompanied by two certificates of authenticity by Paule Cailac, expert, dated 3 July 1963.
