EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ("A. Einstein") to Hans Tanner, n.p., n.d. [canceled Berlin, 29 August 1915 on the verso].

In German. One page on a postcard, 140 x 90mm (two file holes). Addressed on the verso in his hand.

Einstein makes arrangements to meet his former pupil. He forwards his hotel arrangements and mentions he is staying in Zurich through mid-September, then visiting Berlin after September 20th. His correspondent, Hans Tanner, was Einstein's prior student in Zurich, who – in response to the University of Prague offering Einstein a professorship – led a petition among auditors of his lectures to urge officials "to do your utmost to keep this outstanding researcher and teacher at our university" (Correspondence, Vol 5, No 210). Einstein also oversaw Tanner's dissertation on kinetic gas theory in Autumn 1910, and upon his assuming his duties as the Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Prague, suggested that Tanner serve as his assistant (see Correspondence, Vol 5, No 263). This was not to be, however, as Tanner would continue his studies at the University of Basel, instead. Not published in Letters.
