Second edition, containing the first appearance of twenty poems not published in the 1855 edition. It also includes an appendix (“Leaves-Droppings”) with reviews and the full text of Emerson’s famous 21 July 1855 letter to Whitman, along with Whitman’s ten-page response. The backstrip quotes Emerson's letter: "I greet you at the beginning of your career." One of 1,000 copies printed. BAL 21396; Myerson A2.2.

12mo. Frontispiece; 1 p. ad at rear (a little foxing internally, deleted inscription to front endpapers). Publisher's green cloth gilt (recased with later endpapers, extremities lightly rubbed); custom box.
