The first edition, a fine copy, uncut in original boards. This is the second state with “give” (not “gve”) on p. 135 in volume 1. Grolier English 65; Rothschild 463.

Two volumes, quarto (289 x 215mm). Uncut. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Johnson by James Heath after Sir Joshua Reynolds, 2 engraved plates of facsimiles by H. Shepherd, and all seven cancels present (light dampstain to frontispiece, tape repair to one leaf). Original blue-grey paper boards, cream paper spines (some soiling to boards). Provenance: Robert Brown (inscription dated 1854 to p.96).
